INFLAMMATION OF THE TOOTH SUPPORTING STRUCTURES, THE TOOTH-BEARING BONE, AND THE SURROUNDING SOFT TISSUES IS THE FIELD OF PERIODONTOLOGY.
The periodontium (tooth-supporting structures) is a complex system consisting of connective tissue structures (including collagen and fibroblasts), bone, and the root surface of the tooth. Chronic inflammation of this tissue complex (periodontitis) leads to the breakdown of the tooth-bearing jawbone and symptoms such as bleeding gingiva, tooth migration, loosening of teeth, tooth loss, gingival recession, and bad breath (halitosis).
A healthy body through healthy teeth
In addition, periodontitis is associated with numerous systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid diseases. Numerous risk factors (diet, smoking, genetic predisposition, but also insufficient restorations such as fillings, crowns, bridges, or tooth-anchored prostheses) can negatively influence chronic inflammatory processes.
The goal of systematic periodontitis therapy is to prevent progressive, inflammation-related bone loss and thus tooth loss. In addition, this local reduction in inflammation has been shown to have a positive effect on your overall health.
Health with a system
Systematic periodontitis treatment comprises several phases and is made possible at the Dentalzentrum Pankow through close cooperation between various specialist areas (general dentistry, prosthetics, periodontology, and our dental hygienists at the prophylaxis center):
- General assessment of dental status and systemic risk factors
- Initial removal of intraoral risk factors such as caries, insufficient restorations, teeth not worth preserving, and subsequent temporary restoration of hard tooth substance defects and missing teeth
- Dental prophylaxis (PZR)
- Assessment of periodontal status (measurement of pocket depth)
- Systematic anti-infective therapy (AIT)
- Removal of biofilm on the root surface by our dental hygienists
- Reevaluation of AIT (repeated measurement of pocket depth)
- Surgical, regenerative, or resective treatments if necessary
- Maintenance therapy (supportive periodontitis therapy = UPT)
- Dental prophylaxis
- Permanent dental restoration
Sustainable health
The aim of UPT is to prevent reinfection and thus maintain the achieved treatment result (no inflammation) in the long term. Since periodontitis is a chronic disease, maintenance therapy must be carried out regularly (individual recall interval, but at least twice a year) and professionally (dental hygienist) in order to prevent tooth loss and chronic inflammatory processes. This systematic therapy enables long-term tooth preservation, which has a positive impact on your overall quality of life.
